Twice as nice for West softball

IOWA CITY— The West High Women of Troy know the devastating effects of cancer first hand. Pancreatic cancer took Ellyn Found’s life last year soon after her daughter Caroline died in a moped accident. While Caroline’s jersey hung in the dugout, Ellyn was remembered Tuesday night as the softball team wore their purple camouflage shirts and raffled-off items for charity during a varsity double-header against rival City High. $956 was raised and donated to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic’s Hope Lodge. The Hope Lodge, named for Russell and Ann Gerdin, provides free non-medical lodging for cancer patients and their caregivers.
On the diamond West overhauled City 9-0 in the opener and 2-1 in the nightcap. In game one West put up three runs in the second inning, and unleashed a five-run assault in the third and one run in the sixth. Tatum Klein and Grace Tafolla had two hits each with three RBIs for Tafolla and two for Klein. Shelly Stumpff, Michaela Recker, Madi Miller, Morgan Ryan and Mikaela Morgan all had one hit with two RBIs for Morgan and one each for Miller and Stumpff. Recker and Morgan also had doubles.
In the circle Mackenzie Laux pitched a no-hitter, her second consecutive of the season. Laux only walked one Little Hawk and retired nine making 73 Ks so far this year.
West put up both runs in the first inning of the nightcap and held the Little Hawks scoreless until the top of the fourth when a City runner scored on a West error. The fifth and sixth innings were three-up, three-down for City but the Little Hawks mustered up a little scare in the top of the seventh when a batter nailed a double with two outs. West held on though for the win.
Laura Larson, Morgan and Tafolla had West’s three hits, Brianna Sturtz and Stumpff scored the two runs and Larson picked up an RBI.
Haight retired four batters, gave up three hits and one un-earned run.
The Women of Troy are home again on Tuesday, June 19, when Dubuque Hempstead visits for a varsity double-header starting at 5:30 p.m.
