Following are notes I’ve been taking along the way on our bicycle trip from St. Louis to Clinton, Mo., along the Katy trail.
Friday: Made it to motel in time to drive to St. Charles for dinner. The Budweiser Clydesdales were on display.
Saturday: Biked nine miles from motel near airport to Creve Coeur Park, which has a trail that connects with the Katy. For once we didn’t get lost as the route was pretty simple. Continued on the Katy for another 45 miles to end up in Washington, Mo.
On our way out of the motel the next morning we noticed a sign over a drinking fountain saying that the city was under a boil order. No one mentioned it when we checked in so we drank from the motel tap and even filled our water bottles. What’s a little E. coli?
Sunday: Biked 36 miles to Herman. Second day of perfect weather. Made a short side trip and viewed Daniel Boone’s grave/monument. His body isn’t in Missouri since someone in Kentucky stole it? Sabra shopped and bought a tin wall hanging for her sister for Christmas while I sampled a beer at one of the many restaurants and taverns in the area. I don’t know what she was thinking when she bought it since it obviously would not fit in any of our bags. Now I have a spoiler on the trailer I’m pulling.
Had lunch at the Infield in Marthasville. It was an impressive place, seating for several hundred if not more.
Starting to notice subtle differences between Missouri and Wisconsin.
In the Dairy State, they have shows about cooking on television. In the Show Me State, it's extreme bull riding. Conversation is often about eating in Wisconsin. Here, I overheard a conversation where a guy was saying he spent the night in jail because they were arresting his brother and \by God if they're a going to take my brother they're a going to take me too.\ A woman sitting a few seats down chipped in, \Ain't it the truth
