Wayne A. Fjelstad, 75, of Iowa City, died Friday, May 9, 2014, surrounded by his family.
Funeral services were held May 13 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service with burial following at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Wayne’s memory. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web at www.gayanciha.com.
Wayne was born May 26, 1938, in Forest City, the son of Thomas and Mabel (Flugum) Fjelstad. He graduated from Lake Mills High School and later attended Fire Academy in Maryland. He joined the Iowa City Fire Department in December 1965, retiring as battalion chief in February 1991. He also spent many years working for Maher Transfer of Iowa City.
Wayne and his wife, Gloria have been members of Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City for many years.
His family includes Gloria; their children, Jackie Heinle of North Liberty, Dawn (Don) Kasper of Nichols, Koreen (Larry) Langley of Iowa City, and Byron (Mary) Fjelstad of Iowa City; four grandchildren, Angela, Rochelle, Shane and Bryson; five great-grandchildren, Collyn, Cade, Sloane, Sterling and Easton; and Wayne’s brother, Vernon (Loraine) Fjelstad.
