Wayne Lloyd Horak, 64, of Ely, formerly of Alburnett, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014. A Celebration of Life will be March 15 at American Legion Hall in Central City. Burial will take place at a later date.
Survivors include his children, Spencer and Tracy; brothers, Craig (Danielle) Horak, Dale (Paula) Horak and Ron (Karl) Horak; sister, Barbara (Darald) Schultz; two grandchildren, Taylor Ann and Cole; and best friend Digger.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Ardis Horak.
Wayne was an avid gardener and outdoorsman. He will be missed by many.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established at Veridian Credit Union under Wayne Horak Memorial.
Jeffrey Lee Matheny, 54, of Marion, died March 3, 2014.
Private family services will be held at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories.
Memorial donations in Jeff’s name may be directed to the family.
He is survived by his son Cameron Matheny of Cedar Rapids; daughter Nicole Matheny of Iowa City; brother Dennis (Jean) Fritz of Columbus Junction; sister Gloria (Fred) Baker of Marion; sister Sandra Matheny of Cedar Rapids; brother David (Susan) Matheny of Solon; sister Sherry Kubicek of Cedar Rapids; brother Michael Matheny of Iowa City; several nieces and nephews; and many friends who will miss him.
Jeff was preceded in death by his parents and brother James “Jim” Fritz.
Jeff was born Jan. 13, 1960, in Cedar Rapids to Harry Raymond and Esther Lorraine (Sundberg) Matheny. He worked at Quaker Oats for over 25 years, and was still employed there in the shipping department.
Jerry L. McConnell, 74, longtime North Liberty and Solon area resident, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at his home following a sudden heart related ailment. A gathering time for family and friends was held March 8 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers friends may contribute to the charity of their choice.
Jerry was born on Oct. 24, 1939, in Ames, the son of Thane Edgar and Ruthe Frances (Everett) McConnell. He was a graduate of Cedar Rapids Washington High School and attended Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. Jerry served in the U.S. Army. On Dec. 31, 1965, he married Sue Beaver in West Liberty.
Jerry was employed with Quaker Oats in the engineering department, retiring in 1995.
Jerry loved playing Santa Claus at the Solon library and the North Liberty Recreation Center and had an endless supply of jokes that he never hesitated to share with one and all.
Jerry is survived by his wife Sue and their two sons, Marc (Melissa) McConnell of Mount Pleasant and Don (Debi) McConnell of Mendota Heights, Minn.; five grandchildren, Thane, Kelsey, Nathan, Aidan and Riley; two sisters, Jo (Bob) Sanders of Anchorage, Alaska and Dee Edder of Salley, S.C.; his mother-in-law Lourena Beaver of West Liberty; brothers and sisters-in-law Steve (Shelia) Beaver, Jody (Diane) Beaver, Jan VeDepo (Mark Vetter), Alan Beaver (Donna Bruns) and Andy (Becky) Beaver; 16 nieces and nephews, and numerous great nieces and nephews.
