West’s 1-0 win puts them at top of MVC Mississippi Division
IOWA CITY– As the final horn sounded and the teams headed for mid-field to shake hands, West High coach Dave Rosenthal was heard yelling out, “that was good soccer.”
His Women of Troy held off the Cougars of Cedar Rapids Kennedy Friday, May 9, at Baker Field on the West High campus, improving their record to 7-1 in the MVC and 9-1 overall to hold the top spot in the Mississippi Division. West’s only loss thus far came at the hands of Linn-Mar on Tuesday, May 6.
Against the Cougars, West survived a fast assault in the opening minute, and then slogged through the bulk of the first half launching several attacks on the Kennedy goal. With 4:31 remaining in the half, Tia Saunders, a sophomore, drove her way into the Kennedy box, but unable to score, booted the ball back to freshman Regan Steigleder. Steigleder lobbed a shot in just over Kennedy keeper Olivia Weigel’s hand to score. Late in the second half, Rosenthal’s ladies banded together to fend off the Kennedy clan in a late charge.
On Friday, May 16, the Rams of Dubuque Senior visit with the junior varsity match set for 5 p.m. and the varsity following at 7 p.m. West is home again on Tuesday, May 20, in a varsity-only contest against Waterloo East with a 5 p.m. start.
The Women of Troy were ranked third in Class 3A in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s weekly rankings, issued Friday, May 9. Bettendorf was No. 1 while Linn-Mar held the No. 2 slot.
