West’s sister act
CORALVILLE– David Rosenthal had been waiting for six or seven years to have his Women of Troy dominate rival Cedar Rapids Washington. While West has won against the Warriors, last year by penalty kicks as an example, it hasn’t been a complete shut-out.
Until last Tuesday afternoon.
With air temperatures in the low 50s and strong, gusty winds out of the northwest, Rosenthal’s ladies got the job done with a 3-0 MVC win. Mary Hausler, a senior forward scored shooting into the wind just over five minutes into the first half.
West’s second goal led to some manner of confusion as a Warrior inadvertently launched the ball into her own goal. On the West bench there was discussion about who to credit with the score, and senior Leah Murray was unofficially given the goal.
“Our first half was very good, we played smart and quick,” Rosenthal said. He described the second half as harder, saying it was tough for West to adjust to the weather (attacking with the wind). Anna Hausler found the right combination though, knocking in the third goal with mere seconds left to play.
The Women of Troy, with a 3-0 record, kept their number five ranking according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s second soccer rankings issued Thursday, April 12.
