West girls: fourth appearance in a row at Cownie Park
IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy will face Dubuque Hempstead today at 5:30 p.m. at the Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines in the quarterfinal round of the Class 3A Girls State Soccer Tournament.
West earned the right to compete after knocking off the Muskies of Muscatine 2-0 Monday, June 9, in a regional final on the home pitch.
Heelah Nadler knocked in the first goal seven minutes into the second half for a 1-0 lead, and Emma Cooper put away the insurance goal with just over seven minutes remaining in the match.
The win improved West’s record to 16-3 overall, and the team was ranked seventh by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) in its final weekly rankings issued on May 30. Hempstead was ranked fourth.
The tournament appearance is the fourth in a row for coach David Rosenthal and company. In 2011, the team fell in the championship round 1-0 to Ankeny while 2012 saw a quarterfinal round loss, 2-0, to Cedar Rapids Kennedy. Last year, Dowling Catholic knocked out the squad in the semifinal round, 2-0. Dowling was ranked 10th by the IGHSAU in the May 30 rankings.
Overall this will be the Women of Troy’s 13th state tournament appearance.
