West reclaims The Spike
IOWA CITY— The Iowa City West High Women of Troy and the City High Little Hawks have battled annually since 1982 for a golden railroad spike on a marble base. Called “The Spike,” the trophy is the Iowa City prep volleyball equivalent to the rival football teams’ “Boot.”
Last year, after three years of residence at West, the Little Hawks prevailed 3-2 to take The Spike away.
This year, the Women of Troy traveled to City High on a mission to bring home the trophy. With a 3-1 victory, The Spike came home and West’s record improved to 19-5-0 for the season thus far.
Olivia Fairfield– 10 kills, five digs, eight block assists, 21-22 serves with four aces
Kelley Fliehler– two kills, 44 assists, six digs, two block assists, 8-9 serves
Hannah Infelt– seven kills, two block assists, one solo block
Mollie Mason– eight kills, nine digs, two block assists, 15-15 serves
Olivia Mekies– two assists, 13 digs, 13-13 serves
Anna Pashkova– one assist, 13 digs, 14-15 serves
Shelly Stumpff:–18 kills, one assist, five block assists, 23-24 serves with three aces
Laynie Whitehead– six kills, two block assists.
The Women of Troy are home Tuesday, Oct. 4, to entertain Waterloo East.
