West volleyball soars over Jefferson J-Hawks

IOWA CITY– If West High coach Kathy Bresnahan were to fill out a report card for her Women of Troy varsity volleyball team at this point in the season, it would likely contain the words “not working up to their potential.”
The team took care of visiting Cedar Rapids Jefferson Tuesday night in three games, in convincing fashion: 25-12, 25-11 and 25-11; but the coach was not happy with what she saw out on the floor.
“Jefferson struggled, but I’m not pleased with our effort at this point. We were happy with what Jefferson gave us, but we didn’t take control,” she said.
The J-Hawks took the lead briefly in game one but called for a timeout later down 11-5, and again when down 18-9. In game two, the J-Hawks asked for a cease-fire with a 9-3 deficit. In the third, the Women of Troy and J-Hawks fought a pitched battle before the West girls took a 17-11 lead and kept the visitors scoreless for the rest of the match.
Bresnahan lamented that, “(the team’s) attitude hasn’t clicked yet.” That attitude has led to back-to-back State Class 4A Championships. She also is not accepting nor making excuses for it being “a young team,” or a squad with players learning to fill the roles left behind by a large graduating class. For the Women of Troy, it’s about improvement, and the coach noted she has seen some since the start of the season two weeks ago.
The coach said Laynie Whitehead “had a good game and has tremendously improved.” Whitehead made six kills out of 14 attempts, had 13 assists, a dozen digs and made seven aces while serving 22-24. Bresnahan also noted Molly Mason for very steady play, who had nine kills out of 15 attempts and made eight out of nine serves. West improved to 4-5 overall.
