Wild West

IOWA CITY– The Trojans’ first drive of the night was interrupted by a fumble, recovered by the Warriors and converted into a field goal in the opening minutes of the first quarter.
From then on, it was a West Side Story.
The West High Trojans rebounded from a 3-0 deficit early in their Friday night (Aug. 31) game against Cedar Rapids Washington and pummeled the Warriors, 62-37, at home.
A year ago, it was the opposite, with Wash winning 66-37.
The Trojans responded to the field goal with a pair of touchdowns and led after one period, 14-3. Micah Kelsay got the first score with a 1-yard run while DeVaughn McCullough scored when Ezra Reiners blocked a punt. McCullough had the presence of mind to scoop it up and run it in for the easy touchdown.
Colin Baker scored early in the second quarter on a short run, followed by Reiners soring on a Nate Boland pass. Reid Bonner took a kickoff return 98-yards to score and making it 35-10.The Warriors had picked up their first touchdown when quarterback Mitch Blades ran right through the West defense for 50 yards to score.
Jeremy Morgan had successful point after kicks on the first five Trojan touchdowns before turning the duty over to Mueng Sunday.
With 2:19 left in the second quarter, Dondre Alexander took a 45-yard pass from Boland and made a touchdown out of it. A two-point play failed. The Warriors lived up to their name as they kept fighting, earning another touchdown with 1:11 to go in the quarter as Blades again evaded the Trojans, this time for 72 yards.
Morgan reminded the guests who’s house they were in though, taking a 27-yard pass from Boland and scoring with 13 seconds remaining in the half. With Sunday’s kick, West took a comfortable 47-17 lead into the break.
The Trojans kicked off to the Warriors to open the second half and minutes later watched helplessly as Shundell Williams ran straight up the middle 70-plus yards to score.
Micah Kelsay had a busy quarter as he put up back-to back touchdowns of 3 and 15 yards to extend the Trojan lead. Sunday nailed the PAT kicks and West was ahead 62-23 with 4:30 left in the third and the continuous clock in effect.
With the game well in-hand, West coach Brian Sauser gave some of his guys, including Boland and Alexander, the fourth period off. The Warriors scored with just shy of five minutes remaining and got their final touchdown with 35 seconds left on the clock.
The win moves West to 2-0 in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC), Mississippi Division while Washington goes to 1-1 in the Valley Division. Dubuque Senior is the only other Mississippi Division team at 2-0. On Thursday, Sept. 6, the Trojans are set to march into Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids for a divisional match-up with Cedar Rapids Kennedy. The sophomores are set to kick-off at 5 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
