William Patrick Mellon Heintz, 35, beloved and cherished son of Sharon Mellon, and Tetsugen Eric Heintz and Kaye Bair, died unexpectedly in his home in Portland, Ore., on June 14, 2011.
Will was born in Iowa City on Aug. 6, 1975. He attended Horace Mann Elementary School, Solon High School and graduated with a BA from the University of Iowa in Social Anthropology. Will did graduate research in Oaxaca, Mexico, and also studied at the University of Oregon in Eugene and Oregon State in Corvallis. He eventually settled in Portland and was working with great joy and passion in event/festival operations management at the time of his death.
Will did not know a stranger– everyone he met he befriended and he was liked and loved in return. He had the amazing ability to make each and every person feel they had his undivided attention and concern. He was legend for his enigmatically sweet smile and his hugs. He was a hero to friend and acquaintance alike– protecting them and letting them know that if they were every in trouble, he would immediately come to their aid. He was a bright, beautiful, generous and compassionate being. He deeply loved his family and friends and leaves a void in the lives of those loved him and remain behind.
Will is survived by his mother, Sharon Mellon of Solon; his father and step-mother, Tetsugen Eric Heintz and Kaye Bair of Des Moines; his brother and sister-in-law, J. Eric Heintz II and Gina Mastroluca of Westbrook, Maine; his stepbrother and wife, Brent and Kristi Bair of Prior Lake, Minn.; his stepsister and husband, Christine and Michael Searson of Apple Valley, Minn.; his nephews, Kasene Clark, Cody and Cieran Searson, Connor Bair; his niece, Kayla Bair; his uncles and aunts, Joe and Mary Mellon and Mark and Jeanne Mellon of Guttenberg, Kurt Heintz of San Francisco, Calif., and Kristin and Deed Davis of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; his cousins, Sarah Davis, Carrie Stebral, Aubrey Dudley, Michael Mellon, Bridget Ehrhardt, Molly Mellon, Rachael Naatz, and Hannah, Gretchen, Sarah, Saul and Christopher Eck; his grandmother, Helen Heintz; his lifelong friend, Charles Dentino; and other friends in Iowa, Oregon and Mexico, too numerous to list.
Will was preceded in death by his grandparents, Violet and Leo Mellon and James Heintz; his aunt, Joan Eck; and his cousin, Marty Eck.
Will’s Portland friends celebrated his life in a memorial service on June 21. Family and friends will celebrate his life in Iowa on Sept. 4 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Sailboat Shelter No. 1, Sailboat Road NE, Lake Macbride State Park, Solon.
