Wrestlers roll over Nebraska
By Don Lund
The third-ranked Iowa wrestlers took out the Nebraska Cornhuskers 22-9 Saturday at Lincoln, but lost some tough matches.
Derek St. John (157) lost his first match of the year when third-ranked James Green knocked off Derek, 9-7.
James beat Derek last year in the Big Ten Tournament, but Derek bounced back and won the Nationals.
Mike Evans (174) has lost two straight to wrestlers ranked higher then he was, but I have to give him credit, he kept attacking in both matches.
Mike, ranked sixth, lost 7-3 to fourth-ranked Robert Kokesh at Lincoln, but was going strong at the end.
Third-ranked Thomas Gilman (125) continues to improve, winning 2-1 over ninth-ranked Tim Lambert.
Tony Ramos (133) exploded for five takedowns and a 15-4 major.
Tony just keeps coming after you and if you make a mistake or get out of position, it’s a takedown.
Nick Moore (165) looked solid in an 8-2 win which included three takedowns.
Sammy Brooks (184) had to have the biggest win in overtime, a 6-4 victory with a takedown in OT over 11th-ranked T.J. Dudley.
Sammy is a two-time state champ from Illinois and went 19-9 last year as a redshirt freshman.
Ethen Lofthouse is either nicked up or resting, but there is no letdown when Sammy, only a freshman, takes the mat at 184.
Nathan Burak (197) and Bobby Telford (285) secured the victory, although Bobby’s 2-0 win was not that close. Bobby kept attacking, got an escape in the second period and rode his man out in the third.
The Hawks host second-ranked Minnesota this Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
It should be a good one.
