Wrestlers Stay Unbeaten

IOWA CITY– The wrestlers finished their dual season undefeated, beating Indiana and Northwestern. That’s the first time since the 1999-2000 season that the Hawks were perfect and the 24 wins are the most in school history.
On Friday, the Hawkeyes knocked off Indiana, 24-12, winning six matches and losing four, including a forfeit at heavyweight as Dan Erickson’s ankle continues to heal.
A great win by Charlie Faulk at 125. Charlie beat the defending NCAA champ and Big Ten champ Angel Escobedo 3-1 in overtime to get the Hawks off to a good start.
Iowa also got major decisions from Daniel Dennis (133) and Jay Borschel (174) plus a tech fall by Brent Metcalf (149).
Ryan Morningstar (165), Chad Beatty (184) and Phil Keddy (197) also picked up wins.
“We keep proving that offense is what wins,” said Iowa head coach Tom Brands. “This was a team we wrestled that was in a lot of cases maybe outmatched, from their point of view and I would say that they were looking more to keep it close. There were instances at 141 that we fell into that.”
Alex Tsirtsis, ranked second at 141, lost to his former high school teammate, 3-1 in overtime.
Sunday, Iowa won seven of 10 matches including pins by Brent Metcalf and heavyweight Dan Erekson, and rolled to a 34-13 win over Northwestern.
It was good to have Dan come back strong after sitting out a couple of meets with an ankle injury.
Daniel Dennis and Ryan Morningstar recorded major decisions and Jay Borschel had a tech fall.
The best match of the day was at 184 where Phil Keddy took on top-ranked and undefeated Jake Herbert.
Jake smoked Phil at the Midland’s Tournament 15-1 the last time they met.
This time Phil hung tough but Jake pulled out a 3-2 win. That’s the closest anyone has wrestled Jake all year.
Iowa has a week off before entering the Big Ten Tournament March 7-8.
They should be ready and should be favored to win.
I’m looking for nine Hawkeyes to qualify for the National Championship.
