Young to coordinate city recreation activities
By B. Adam Burke
SOLON– Travis Young is Solon’s new Activities Coordinator, the first to be hired in the newly-created job.
He’ll split his time between Parks and Recreation programming and the Public Works department doing groundskeeping work.
On just his fourth day on the job, Young, 25, marveled at the opportunities in the area.
He gave praise to Solon’s community and what it offers, “We have the facilities to do a lot. We’ve been blessed. People have been generous,” he said, noting the donated time and money given to create the Solon Recreation and Nature Area.
He also said he wants to “give more opportunities for kids and adults” by expanding into adult activities. “I’d like to team up with Senior Advocates and other groups,” he said.
Young grew up in Clear Lake, graduated from Iowa State in 2008 and completed an internship in Sports Information and Game Management at Vanderbilt University and Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn.
In his duties for the fall, he’ll coordinate with coaches and manage scheduling of the fields for soccer and flag football.
But sports aren’t everything. “We want to do what’s best for the kids and people of Solon, not only in athletics, but general opportunities as well,” he noted. He’d also like to start a volleyball league and work with Mt. Vernon and North Liberty to bring area towns together for more varied programs.
The new full-time position starts at $15 per hour.
