Raymond Patrick Mulherin, 89, of Fairfax, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids after a stroke.
Funereal Mass was celebrated Monday, Dec. 22, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fairfax, by the Rev. Dustin Vu. Burial was in St. Patrick Cemetery. A rosary service and visitation were held Sunday, Dec. 21 at Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids. Visitation was also held Monday at the church.
Ray is survived by two sons, Robert of Swisher and Loren of Fairfax; four daughters, Elaine (Larry) Arnold and Carolyn (Jim) Roberg of Cedar Rapids, Marita (Darrel) Schmidt of Rochester Hills, Mich., and Marlene (Ron) Dusil of Fairfax; eight grandchildren, Christine Walton, Gregory Mulherin, Dr. Jeffrey Roberg, Kimberly Hawkins, Colleen Andrews, Dr. Brenda Mulherin, Jessika Brown and Trevor Schmidt; and great-grandchildren, Hanna, Wyatt, Emily, Madeline, Jason, Alyssa, Allison, Avery, Cameron and Laila.
His wife Bernice, son Raymond, brothers Glen and Newman, stepmother Henrietta Mulherin, step-brother Raymond Field, and step-sisters Helen Ann Patterson, Pat Zieser and Marge King preceded Ray in death.
Ray was born May 31, 1919, in rural Linn County, the son of Frank and Sadie Griffin Mulherin. Ray graduated from St. Patrick Catholic School, Cedar Rapids, in 1936. He married Bernice Sampson on Aug. 25, 1943, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fairfax. She died in 2002. Raymond farmed in the Fairfax area for years and retired in 1982 as a machinist from Nissen Trampoline Co.
Ray was very proud of his Irish heritage. He enjoyed listening to Irish and polka music and attending the Iowa State Fair, and loved talking with people.
