Sarah Carroll Pulvermacher began life on July 8, 1981, at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac, Wis. The family moved to Reedsburg, Wis. in 1982 and she grew up and attended Sacred Heart School for eight years and then Reedsburg Area High School, where she graduated in 1999 as one of the valedictorians. She attended Luther College, majoring in biology. Upon graduation, she was accepted at the University of Iowa and completed her doctoral requirements and was due to graduate on Dec. 20, 2008, with a Ph.D. in microbiology. Sarah met the love of her life, Sean Connolly, six years ago, when they both attended a summer microbiology internship program. They were engaged and planning an Oct. 17, 2009, wedding. Sarah and Sean were killed in a tragic car accident on Dec. 17 in Coralville.
This bright, beautiful young woman will be dearly missed by her parents, Joan and Neal Pulvermacher; and her sister and best friend, Megan Pulvermacher. All are of Reedsburg. Also surviving are grandmothers, Mary Ann Carroll of Lancaster, Wis., and Alice Pulvermacher of Princeton, Wis.; 23 aunts and uncles; and 52 cousins; along with many friends from Reedsburg, Luther College and the University of Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Roger Carroll and Norman Pulvermacher, who are now the protectors and guardians of Sarah and Sean.
Visitation was held Monday, Dec. 22 at Farber Funeral Home in Reedsburg, and Tuesday, before Mass at the church. A memorial Mass was held on Tuesday, Dec. 23, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Reedsburg.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in Sarah’s memory. Donations will be made to the animal shelter, for she loved animals, especially golden retrievers, and a scholarship will be established in her name.
A joint memorial service is being planned in Iowa City for Sean and Sarah.
