David Gudenkauf, 69, of Lake Delhi, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 14, 2009, at his home after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 17, at St. Johns Catholic Church, Delhi. Visitation was Friday, Jan. 16 at Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello.

Surviving are his wife, Laura; eight children, Kim (Keith) Simoens and DeAnn (Scott) Crawley, both of Cedar Rapids, Keith (Susan) Gudenkauf, Delhi, Charlie (Mary) Gudenkauf, and Barb (Brian) Marak, both of Swisher, Rose Gudenkauf, Delhi, Nancy Biggs, El Mirage, Ariz., and Steve (Sandy) Gudenkauf, Alburnett; 14 grandchildren, Tyler (Marjorie) Simoens, Kelsy Simoens, Anthony and Lauren Crawley, Brianna and Brandon Gudenkauf, Jade, Malia and Grace Gudenkauf, Tanner and Trennan Marak, Ashley Wade, Jessica and James Gudenkauf; four brothers, Galen, John, Rick and Mike; and seven sisters, LaVonne, Terri, Mary, Becky, Bernadette, Janet and Brenda.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Joan Lamparek.
David Gudenkauf was born Nov. 14, 1939, near Hopkinton, Iowa. He was the son of Louis and Grace Slauson Gudenkauf. He received his education in the rural schools near Sand Springs. David enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1956 until 1958. David Gudenkauf and Laura Wernimont were married Oct. 22, 1959, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Monticello. The couple farmed near Cascade and later near Swisher. David started Gudenkauf Concrete Construction when they lived in Cedar Rapids. In 1985, the couple moved to Phoenix, where he worked construction in many of the western states. The couple retired and moved to Lake Delhi in 2001. David was a member of the American Legion in Delhi and Swisher, the Knights of Columbus, and was a friend of Bill where he received his 16-year pin. David was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother and will be dearly missed by his family.
