Wilma Mae (Smahel) Bowersox, 93, of Swisher, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at Higley Mansion Care Center in Cedar Rapids. Visitation was Sunday, Feb. 15, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Services were held Monday, Feb. 16, at Brosh Chapel, with burial following in the Shueyville Cemetery.
Wilma was born July 11, 1915, in Johnson County, the daughter of Emil and Libbie (Becicka) Smahel. She graduated from Shueyville High School. She married Robert Bowersox in Cedar Rapids on Oct. 14, 1939.
Wilma lived in the Swisher area all of her single and married life. They built a house in Swisher in 1979 but continued farming until 1987. She loved her family, adored her grandchildren, enjoyed cooking for them and listening to their good times and giving them advice with their problems. Wilma loved to do crossword puzzles, crochet, knit, and tend to her flowers and her house. She liked to be around people, friends, run her own errands and visit on the phone. Wilma always watched the Hawkeye games on TV.

Wilma is survived by her son, Michael Bowersox of Swisher; daughter-in-law, Madelyn Bowersox of West Des Moines; grandchildren, Lisa Bowersox of Petoskey, Mich., Christopher (Angela) Bowersox of Johnston, Andrea (Troy) Hicks of North Liberty, and Matt (Amy) Bowersox of Chicago; great-grandson, Owen Hicks of North Liberty; three sisters-in-law, Ruth Kloubec of West Chicago, Helen Whiting of Waunakee, Wis., and Marion Edwards of Williamsburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert in June 1999; son, Terry in April 1999; brother, Robert and his wife, Vlasta; five sisters-in-law and eight brothers-in-law.
