Donald L. Kayser, 75, of Sebring, Fla., formerly of Independence, died Thursday evening, Feb. 12, 2009, at the Palms of Sebring Care Center following a long illness.
Memorial Mass was held Saturday at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, by the Rev. Don Plamondon, with inurnment in the church cemetery. Visitation was Saturday at the church. Arrangements are with Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence.
He is survived by a daughter, Denise (Randy) Miller of Solon; two grandsons, Jesse and Nathan Miller; three sisters, Sister Mary Agatha Kayser of Dubuque, Maxine O’Connell Kalvig of Ionia and Betty Kleitsch of Fairband; and his significant other, Lisa Bickel of Glen Burnie, Md.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Naomi; a brother, Anthony Kayser; and brothers-in-law, Irwin O’Connell and Orville Kleitsch.
Don was born Oct. 10, 1933, in Independence, the son of Joseph W. and Agatha A. (Schmitz) Kayser. He graduated from St. John’s High School in 1951, following which he farmed the family farm near Independence. Don also operated a commercial crop spraying business in the Independence area, drove stock cars, and participated in tractor pulls. He was one of the first large scale farmers, operating farms in Iowa, Louisiana, and Texas before his retirement in 1990. In 1999, Don made his home in Glen Burnie, Md., and wintered in Sebring, Fla.
