IOWA CITY (March 3, 2009) - The Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce will host a community information meeting to discuss Amtrak passenger train service connecting Iowa City to Chicago through the Quad Cities at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 12 at the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce, 325 East Washington Street, Iowa City.
“The economic stimulus bill, dwindling energy reserves, fluctuating gas prices and Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Olympics coalesce to make this an opportune time for this project,” said Nancy Quellhorst, president & CEO of the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce. “The Area Chamber is actively lobbying for the 79-mile-per-hour Amtrak passenger train and we want the community to learn about this exciting project.”
The public is encouraged to attend. Iowa City Area Chamber staff will share the proposed rail line route and depot, envisioned in downtown Iowa City. Ridership, cost and timeline of the project will be discussed. Among constituencies enthusiastic about the initiative are University of Iowa leaders.
