Gertrude Louise “Gert” Albaugh Kurth, 75, of Marion, formerly of Mechanicsville, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009, in her Cedar Rapids home from a brief illness. Funeral service was held on Sunday at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices in Mount Vernon Chapel by the Reverend Jen Filter. Private family burial was held on Monday in Rose Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsville.
Surviving Gertrude are her children, Terry (Dan) Van Syoc, San Antonio, Texas; Dan (Angie Himes), Mechanicsville; Becky (Francis) McElroy, Waterloo; and Lisa (Mark) Doser, North Liberty; grandchildren: Erica, Sarah, Kyle Van Syoc, Tricia (Andy) Pugh, Jeremiah (Wendoly), Melissa and Nichole Kurth, Austin and Abby Cousins; great-grandchildren: Ashley, Rachel, and Benjamin. Gertrude is also survived by her four-legged friends, Obadiah and Summit.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, Donald Albaugh and Dorothy Harshbarger, and former husband Paul “Dean” Kurth.
Gertrude was born Aug.18, 1933, in Tipton and graduated from Tipton High School in 1951. She married Dean Kurth. They later divorced. Gertrude was a mom and bookkeeper for Dean’s 76. Later she sold AFLAC. She worked in maintenance at Oakdale Correctional Facility and her favorite job was a cashier for Coe College food service. Gertrude was very involved in the Summer Games and Youth Summer Camps through the United Methodist Church. She was a faithful member of United Parish, Coggon.
Gertrude’s loves of her life were her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her pets. She cherished her beloved friend Carol Schumacher.
