IOWA CITY– Riverside Theatre, Iowa City’s resident professional theatre company, will offer four new education classes and workshops in September and October. Professional actors and writers who have participated in past Riverside productions will teach the sessions. Registrations are being accepted now through the Riverside box office.
• “Beginning Improvisation,” a four-session class taught by actor and improviser Martin Andrews. This class will teach the basic ideas of improvisational speaking and thinking through fun activities and exercises. Sundays, Sept. 20, Sept. 27, Oct. 4 and Oct. 25, 6-8 p.m. Tuition: $80.
• “Screenwriting,” a two-day workshop taught by screenwriter John Bates. This workshop will introduce writers to the process of creating a professional film treatment—the first step in developing a film script. Oct. 11-12, 7-9 p.m. Tuition: $40.
• “Your Story Told: Creating Narratives and Monologues from Life,” a two-day workshop taught by playwrights Sean Lewis and Jennifer Fawcett. This workshop will help participants share their own stories: family narratives, stories of birth, of passing, of struggle and triumph. Oct. 13-14, 7-9 p.m. Tuition: $40.
• “Selling a Song,” a two-day workshop taught by performer Kristen Behrendt. This workshop will help singers and performers develop their vocal technique, physical presence, and overall interpretation of a song. An accompanist will be provided. Oct. 15-16, 7-9 p.m. Tuition: $50.
