IOWA CITY– The League of Women Voters, Johnson County, (LWVJC) will host a Candidates’ Forum for the Johnson County supervisory candidates Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Iowa City Public Library, meeting room A.
LWVJC member Alison Smith will moderate the forum, which will consist of a 5-minute introductory statement from each candidate, followed by questions formulated by the League, as well as written questions taken from the audience. The LWVJC will provide cards for audience members to submit written questions as they enter.
The question and answer period will be followed by three minutes of closing remarks from each candidate. The evening will conclude with an informal social time from 8:30 to 9 p.m.
The Candidates’ Forum will be broadcast live, taped and rebroadcast several times on the local public and government television stations, prior to the January 19 special election. The special election was required by public petition to fill a vacancy on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors left by the passing of Supervisor Larry Meyers in September, 2009.
So far, two candidates have filed petitions to run in the election: Democratic party candidate Janelle Rettig of Iowa City, who was appointed to fill the term ending December 21, 2010; and Republican nominee Lori Cardella of rural Solon, who led the push for a special election via public petition.
The deadline to file nominations by petition is Monday, Dec. 28.
