A strong regional performance is one thing. Solon not only moves up to Class 3A this season, but has to battle seven other regional champions, as well as the rest of the field for points at State. Tops in the field may be Dubuque Wahlert. Mount Vernon-Lisbon is the defending Class 3A champ, though Solon has beaten them a couple of times. “They have some of the top individuals and relays; they can count on scoring high. They have the experienced runners that are used to being there,” noted Solon Coach Brent Sands.
Davenport Assumption and Waverly Shell-Rock are also factors in the chase for a state title. “We have an opportunity to win a couple events if we perform very well and then we will really need to rely on placing well; third through eighth place points could end up being good to us, if we can get enough of them,” said Sands, saying they’ll set their sights on first and see where it leads.
