SOLON– Solon girls soccer had another busy, but successful week. They opened on Tuesday, May 17, at home against a very good and very physical Center Point-Urbana team. Early in the first half, Alison McKinnie sent a perfect long pass to Danielle Herdliska. Herdliska sent the ball flying into the goal off her head. Later in the half it was Herdliska who placed a great pass to Tori Takes, who bounced it in with her upper body. In the second half, Erica Singkofer hit a beautiful high kick that sailed into the goal well above the keeper’s head.
It was the only scoring the Lady Spartans would need in the 3-0 win.
There was plenty of action at both ends of the field. The backfield of Mallory Hufford, Katherine Carr, Sadie Walkner and Allie Mercer did an outstanding job of getting the ball right back to the offense all afternoon. Keeper Nikki Sedlacek had one of her busier days with 17 saves.
The junior varsity (JV) squad ended its day at 0-2 against pretty much the same team of girls the varsity played.
Thursday, May 19, the Spartans travelled to Wellman where they overpowered Mid-Prairie. Alison McKinnie set a school record with eight goals for the game. Danielle Herdliska drilled in another two goals. McKinnie and Herdliska each had two assists. Tori Takes and Jackie Meyer each added one assist for the day. Goalie Nikki Sedlacek was only kept busy by batting bugs away in a shortened 10-0 victory.
The junior varsity also held the Mid-Prairie varsity team scoreless.
Friday, May 20, the girls went west into the oncoming storm at Clear Creek Amana (CCA). Coming into this match-up, CCA had only given up 10 goals and had three losses. The first half was a battle at both ends, but mostly controlled by Solon’s offense. Every Solon player did an outstanding job of covering the ball and battling to control the game.
The rain started to pour down at half-time and that seemed to ignite Solon’s flame. Seventeen minutes into the half, the Spartans made a long downfield push that ended with an assist by Danielle Herdliska and a goal by Tori Takes. The Lady Spartan defense immediately took the ball away from CCA on the kickoff and sent it to Alison McKinnie, who took it half the length of the field and on in to the goal. McKinnie booted in a beautiful shot off an Anna Seydel assist with nine seconds left in the game to give Solon a 3-0 win.
