Patrons of all ages are making the Solon Public Library a popular place to be this summer. The Summer Reading Program is pulling in lots of patrons for the programming and reading for prizes, as well as checking out books. On Tuesday, June 7, one daycare visit, two children’s programs and family night brought 710 visitors into the library. An unprecedented attendance of 43 patrons attended Teens On Tuesdays @ 2.
A huge evening crowd was on hand for “Wild Animals with Torben Platt”. He brought an iguana, a baby alligator, a blue tongued skink, several turtles, a giant tortoise, and three snakes. Jen Leveck said, “There were squeals and exclamations from young and old when each of the animals appeared.” After the program, everybody had a chance to get up close and personal with the animals. Many also got to take some snake skin home, since the ball python was shedding his skin during the program.
Funding of the programming and prizes for the Summer Reading Program is provided by Friends of the Solon Library, Hills Bank of Mt Vernon, Solon State Bank and Solon Women’s Club. Thank-you sponsors, for a great week at the library!
Save the date(s)
The library will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of its current building in August. For the past six months a special committee has been planning a celebration. Plan to attend one or several events during the week of August 14 through the 21. Pick up a schedule of events at the circulation desk for all the details. Briefly, there will be a continental breakfast, senior lunch, Gala evening and a birthday party picnic along with a Barnes & Noble guest, euchre tournament with prizes and library tours.
Solon Book Club meeting set for June 21
The June meeting of the Solon Book Club will be member’s choice. Each may read a biography or autobiography of their choice and share a synopsis with the group. The last meeting before summer hiatus will be Tuesday, June 21, at 6:30 p.m. so there’s plenty of time to pick a biography. After a break for the summer, the Solon Area Book Club will resume in September.
Books For Troops
We continue to send boxes to our deployed troops. Postage for the shipments is sponsored jointly between Friends of the Solon Library and the American Legion Auxiliary. One box is sent every month and donations make it possible to send additional boxes. To date, 11 boxes have been shipped. Monetary donations have dropped off since the initial announcement of the project. Our troops are still deployed and still appreciate all that we send. A collection jar for any donation you wish to give is located at the circulation desk in the library. New DVD movies, bags of candy, Ziploc bags and new poker chips may be donated as well.
Thanks to all who have left donations in the past and continue to leave current magazines at the library to be included in the shipments.
Paperback books, current magazines, DVD movies, wrapped hard candies; decks of cards, ink pens, freezer bags, and a daily newspaper are included in each box.
Questions as well as donations may be directed to Margo Redlinger, 624-3780.
