SOLON– Solon’s softball squad stayed at No. 6 in the 3A rankings last week after sweeping two WaMaC foes and dropping a close one.
But the Lady Spartans also went 1-3 at the Urbandale Elite Eight Tournament over the weekend.
Last week, the Lady Spartans easily handled West Dubuque in WaMaC action, taking both games of a doubleheader. Solon pitcher Arran Weeces struck out 13 hitters while giving up just three hits.
Alyssa Rickels and Mel Breza each scored twice. Rickels had a stolen base and Breza went 3-4. Ali Herdliska went 1-2 with a double and one run scored. Solon won the first game 10-3.
Casey Musgrave and Holly Hinkel shared pitching duties in the second game. Solon scored six in the first inning and mostly kept the Bobcats off the bases, giving up just three hits and two runs. Herdliska hit two doubles and had four RBIs. Emma Rickels went 3-4 and Kara Misel went 3-3 with two stolen bases.
Weeces recorded 13 strikeouts in a loss against Pleasant Valley Wednesday, June 15. Weeces gave up one unearned run in the 0-1 loss which saw Solon outhit the Pleasant Valley squad 5-3. Rickels and Musgrave each went 2-3 with a stolen base each.
Following the tough loss, Solon bounced back by sweeping another doubleheader, this time handing the Maquoketa Cardinals a shutout in the first game. Weeces had 11 strikeouts, gave up one walk and no hits. Kristin Purdy pitched in relief in the 5-0 win. Breza scored twice and hit a double and Stewart hit two RBIs.
The second game had Solon in front 5-0 after the first inning. Musgrave and Hinkel shared pitching duties. Breza hit a 2-run homer in the third inning and Hannah Turkal had two RBIs. Solon was outhit 10-6.
Over the weekend, the Lady Spartans defeated host Urbandale 4-3, but then lost to Johnston, Cedar Rapids Xavier and Des Moines Lincoln at the Urbandale Elite Eight Tournament.
