TIFFIN — The Vikings of Vinton-Shellsburg stayed far enough ahead of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers Monday night, June 27, for a doubleheader sweep on the baseball diamond.
The losses dropped the Clipper boys to 6-16 overall and 6-13 in the WaMaC.
The Vikings won the opener 11-7 with a pair of runs in the top of the first, two more in the third, three in the fifth and sixth, and one in the seventh. The Clippers put up one run each in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings; had two in the sixth, and one in the seventh.
Tyler Schulte, Zach Volk, A.J. Liddell and Justin Keith each had doubles while Nile Eckermann gave the home crowd a reason to cheer with a homer. Dillon Villhauer and Dalton Beckler also put up hits for the Clippers. Beckler took the loss throwing all seven innings. Beckler gave up nine earned runs, walked one and struck-out eight.
Vinton-Shellsburg took the nightcap 3-2 with one run in the second and two in the sixth. The Clippers struck first with runs in the bottom of the first and second innings.
Eckermann posted a double in the effort while Villhauer, Volk, Zach Anderson and Keith also put the bats to good use with hits. Villhauer took the loss with seven innings of work on the mound. Villhauer gave up one earned run, struck out five and walked one.
