IOWA CITY — Green and yellow streamers and chalked tributes marked the sidewalk down to the diamond. “Alise #15” was chalked on the roof of the visitors’ dugout. At first glance, one would think it was shortstop Alise Miller’s birthday.
Actually it was Senior Night, and Miller is the only senior on West’s young varsity softball team.
The Women of Troy disposed of the Waterloo East Trojans 11-7 and 5-1.
In game one, the East Trojans scored one run in the top of the fourth inning, four in the fifth and two in the seventh.
Tatum Klein led-off for West and opened the offensive with a triple. A double by number two hitter Brianna Sturtz brought Klein home. Morgan Ryan scored in the second when Mikaela Morgan knocked an RBI single and Klein smacked another triple to score Morgan as West took a 3-0 lead.
In the third inning, West loaded up the bases with singles by Shelly Stumpff, Lauren Larson and Michaela Recker. Four runs were scored as Ryan hit an RBI single, Morgan brought in a run, and Klein drove in two runs with a single. Ryan hit a triple to open West’s half of the fifth inning and came home on a Morgan hit attempt. Klein and Sturtz doubled and singled respectively putting runners at first and third. Stumpff walked, loading up the bases again. Larson came to the plate with two outs and belted out a two-run double for a 10-5 lead.
Klein brought Morgan home in the sixth for the final run. The Women of Troy put up 15 hits and committed one error. Mackenzie Laux threw all seven innings striking out ten and giving up ten hits and six earned runs.
Both squads were scoreless in the nightcap until the bottom of the third when Lynn Jehle walked, Klein bunted and made it safely to first, and Sturtz put up a single to score Jehle. East answered with a run in the top of the fourth by loading the bases but only put one run across the plate to tie. In the bottom of the fourth,. Larson put up a base hit and was replaced on base by courtesy runner Caroline Found. Found scored on a Danielle Chelf hitting attempt for the 2-1 lead.
The Women of Troy struck again in the fifth as Morgan, Klein and Sturtz all singled to fill the bases. Miller hit an RBI single and was replaced on base by Amber Tomas. The runners advanced and a run came in on a Stumpff hit attempt, and Larson’s sacrifice bunt brought in the fifth and final run of the night.
Coach Jeff Kelley’s Heroes put up six hits and made one error. Stumpff worked all seven innings in the circle striking out five, giving up five hits and one earned run. The Women of Troy moved to 17-5 in the MVC and 29-9 overall.
