MANCHESTER– The Lady Spartans have their first WaMaC title.
Solon’s varsity volleyball team took to the road last week for a showdown with No. 6 West Delaware. At stake was the WaMaC East championship for two teams sporting identical 6-0 conference records.
Two hundred points and five sets later, the Lady Spartans were displaying their homemade conference championship banner on the floor of last year’s state runner-up.
Solon defeated West Delaware 25-16, 27-25, 25-14, 22-25, 15-11.
The Lady Spartans cruised to an opening game win, but were playing back on their heels in game two, according to Head Coach Kurt Trout.
Solon rebounded to a big point margin in game three, before West Delaware took another close game, forcing the deciding game five.
“Game five was a seesaw battle, and Solon trailed 8-9, before going on a three-point run– winning the game 15-11 with senior Reagan Johnson sealing the title with a kill from the right side,” Trout reported.
Solon moved to 23-1 overall, still maintaining its no. 2 ranking in 3A.
Although West Delaware had more attacks at the net, Solon was more successful, with 63 kills on the night. Kelsey Cave led the team with 23, while Kelsey Hinrichs followed with 19. Hinrichs also had 24 assists and was 21-22 from the service line. Cave also led with 11 of the team’s 19 blocks. Rylee Smith had 17 digs to pace the team and went 21-21 in serves. Emma Rickels had a team-high 28 assists.
The Lady Spartans will host a portion of the WaMaC Conference Tournament this week. Substate regional play begins Oct. 24 when the Lady Spartans host Williamsburg in a Region 7 opening round match.
