TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clipper varsity volleyball squad will share the WaMaC West Division Title with the Marion Indians following a win Thursday night, Oct. 6, at home against the Sailors of Waterloo Columbus. CCA and Marion both finished the regular season at 6-1 in conference play (18-7-0 overall) for the title. Williamsburg and Columbus both finished 5-2, Vinton-Shellsburg ended the season 3-4. Center Point-Urbana, Independence and Benton Community were 1-6 in conference play.
The Clippers bought their half of the title with a hard-earned 3-0 shutout of the Sailors 25-22, 26-24 and 25-21.
“It was not a pretty match,” Coach Brian Bronzynski said. While it may not have been the most textbook example of the sport, the coach noted “what the match lacked in finesse, it had in determination by both teams.”
Amy Kalkhoff led the Clippers with eight kills, Hanna Stokes and Laura Neuzil put up seven each. Lutz was tops in digging with 23 while Kate Hergert led the team with 19 assists. Kalkhoff had four blocks total (two solo, two assisted), Fligg had three (one solo, two assisted). At the line, Kate Hergert was perfect with 13-13 and one ace. Neuzil made 11-11 with an ace as well. Liz Hergert made 15 of 16 with a pair of aces, Kalkhoff went 9-12 with a pair of aces and Fligg put up 11-14 with three aces.
“I have to give Columbus a lot of credit,” Bronzynski said, “they never quit fighting, even late in the third game. Our CCA kids have given a fantastic effort all season, and this match was no different.”
