CEDAR FALLS– Brian Sauser’s West High Trojans pulled off an upset Friday night (Oct. 21), handing the No. 2-ranked Cedar Falls Tigers their first loss on the last night of the regular season, 21-10.
West came into the contest at the UNI-Dome with a 6-2 record and walked out 7-2 while number crunchers at the Iowa High School Athletic Association labored to put together the post-season playoff brackets.
The Trojans held a 14-0 lead at the half thanks to a pair of touchdown runs by quarterback Charles Rogers. West gave up a Tiger field goal in the third, and sealed the win with an Anthony Brown touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Cedar Falls put up its only touchdown in the fourth as well.
Rogers was the leading rusher with 141 yards on 26 carries, Brown hauled the freight seven times for 33 yards, and Richard Bryant put up 21 yards on a lucky 13 carries. In the air assault, Rogers had 162 yards as he completed 12-17 passes. Dondre Alexander was Rogers’ favorite target, taking six passes for 99 yards while Jeremy Morgan caught five for 64.
West opens the second season at home on Wednesday, Oct. 26, as the men in green face Dubuque Wahlert in the first round of Class 4A playoffs. Round two is set for Monday, Oct. 31; the quarterfinal round will be Friday, Nov. 4; and the semifinal round is on Friday, Nov. 11. The Class 4A Championship Game will be Friday, Nov. 18.
