IOWA CITY — The West High Women of Troy improved to 13-0, on Friday the 13th.
If B.J. Mayer’s crew was superstitious, they didn’t show it as they faced cross-town rival City High at home in front of a capacity crowd.
West edged ahead to a 17-14 lead after the first period. Ally Disterhoft put up ten of those points including a three-pointer and a free throw which had to spin around the rim several times before dropping through the net.
Tatum Klein nailed a three-bomb in the second to give West a 24-18 lead. However the Little Hawks, powered by standout Sierra Chambers, sank three in a row to tie. Mackenzie Piper’s reverse lay-up followed by a Shelly Stumpff bucket and a put-back by Klein gave West the 30-24 lead. West took a 38-37 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Women of Troy went on a rampage in the third period as Stumpff, Jessica Shull, Piper and Klein gave West a 51-41 lead. Shahana Williams made it a 12-point gap while another Piper bucket put the Women of Troy ahead a lucky 13, 58-45.
Piper put up two baskets to open the fourth period and Brianna Sturtz closed it with two as West took the 72-64 win. Klein led West with 17 points, Disterhoft had 16 and Piper posted an even dozen. Stumpff and Williams had nine points apiece, Sturtz added five and Jessica Shull had four.
The team next faces Cedar Rapids Prairie on the road Friday, Jan. 20. On Jan. 24, West entertains Cedar Falls.
