The passing of long time library supporter and good friend, Don Ochs, has brought back many memories and caused fellow library supporters to reminisce fondly. As well as being instrumental in building the new library, Don served on the Library Board of Trustees and the Library Foundation Board. The library would not be where it is today without him. After the Solon Library Foundation board meeting on Thursday, Jan. 19, board member Sandra Hanson announced the Foundation’s annual $500 scholarship will be designated the “Solon Library Foundation– Don Ochs Scholarship” in his memory and in recognition of his service.
“Don was a key member of the building effort,” said Chris Schlotfelt, president of the Friends board. “He took on the role of historian by taking numerous pictures as the building took shape. His pragmatism and his dedication to the library and the community of Solon made him a valuable member of the building committee.” Schlotfelt continued, “Having served with Don on both the building committee and foundation board, Don never failed to thank me for my contributions, and after those long, sometimes contentious building committee meetings, his words of encouragement and thanks helped me stay positive. I don’t think that I expressed my thanks to him often enough.”
Kris Brown, library director added, “Don Ochs was the most positive person I knew. He was always a can-do kind of person and really brought the best out of our boards and committees.”
While Don’s physical presence will no longer be seen around the building, the fruit of his labor will be present for generations to come. May we say thank you one more time, as Don would have said to us. Thank-you Don, for your dedication and service to the Solon library. Memorials may be directed to the Solon Library Foundation according to the family’s wishes.
