Nancy Sue Smith passed away peacefully Thursday morning, Jan. 26, 2012, at her home in Swisher at age 53. Her loving husband, David, was with her as were her pets, her beloved ‘critters.’ Her remains were taken to Brosh Chapel for cremation.
Nancy Sue Peter was born in Rochester, N.Y., on Sept. 1, 1958. She was adopted at birth by Walter and Dorothy Peter. Nancy graduated from Penfield High School in Rochester in 1976 and came to Iowa City that fall to attend the University of Iowa. She graduated in 1980 with a B.A. in English and remained in or near Iowa City for the rest of her life. She married David on April 25, 2003, in Iowa City.
Nancy was a longtime employee of NCS-Pearson, retiring in 2003. She was a lifetime member and avid supporter of the Swisher American Legion Auxiliary, which she joined in 2004 during her husband’s deployment in Kuwait. She counted the ladies of the Auxiliary among her closest friends.
Nancy loved drama, theatre and literature. She truly loved books and was an avid reader. Books were a comfort to her all her life. She was extraordinarily gifted intellectually; her fund of knowledge was staggering. Cooking was a favorite pastime. She was a talented chef and consistently put gourmet quality meals on her table. Fine dining at quality restaurants was always a great pleasure.
Nancy was a gentle, loving, caring person. She was generous to friends and family and actively supported many charitable causes. Her family, her extended family, and her many friends will miss her terribly. Nancy: We will love you forever.
