CEDAR RAPIDS– The area’s first regional year-round market is looking for unique vendors ready to make the NewBo City Market their year-round home. Those wishing to lease a permanent space in the market have until May 31 to apply.
Kurt Friese, director of healthy food and advocacy, is leading the search. “We are looking for local farmers and entrepreneurs who can supply produce year round, or run a small butcher shop, or serve prepared foods, coffee, cheese, baked goods, flowers, etc. At its heart, the market is an effort to bring the best of Iowa food to the public.”
While the market will house seasonal vendors, the permanent sellers are key. “These will be permanent stalls inside the market hall. They will ensure that the NewBo City Market will be an inviting place to shop for good, healthy food with a welcoming atmosphere that encourages everyone to linger.”
The committee will choose finalists from among those who apply, and announce them on June 15. Holiday market vendors have until June 30 to apply, and further deadlines for later seasonal markets will be announced this summer.
To apply to be considered for selection, drop an email to Kurt Friese at Kurt@NewBoCityMarket.com .
The NewBo City Market is a year-round public market to be located on a full square block at the key crossroads of 12th Avenue and 3rd Street SE in the flood devastated New Bohemia neighborhood of Cedar Rapids. The centerpiece of the NewBo City Market is the 18,000 square-foot Market Hall where residents shop from small food entrepreneurs, farmers and artisan sellers. The Market Hall also will house a teaching kitchen through a partnership with Kirkwood Community College. A playground, plaza, farmers market yard and demonstration gardens complete the block.
The NewBo City Market is scheduled to open in November 2012.
