CORALVILLE– At halftime, West High coach Brad Stiles wasn’t overly thrilled with his guys’ first-half performance. After shifting some players into new positions and reviewing his strategy and desire for at least one more goal (West led 1-0 at the break thanks to Justin Baker scoring not quite three minutes into the first half); he sent them back onto the field with these parting words: “Do it in the first 10 minutes and we’ll all have big smiles on our faces at the end.”
It didn’t quite work out that way.
The Lions of Linn-Mar roared as they managed to get the ball past West keeper Ryan Holte in the ninth minute of the second half to tie the match 1-1. Bryton Ostler scored in the final five minutes, getting Stiles the second goal he wanted. Victory appeared to be at hand until a foul in the final seconds changed everything.
With three seconds on the clock, a Lion scored on a set piece, otherwise known as a free kick to tie and send the match into overtime. The first 10 minute extra period was scoreless. Just past the half-way point of the second overtime period, Paris Martins scored for West, ending the match in sudden death.
