ANAMOSA– The Solon Lady Spartans clinched the WaMaC East championship Saturday, ending their conference play undefeated for the season. The girls are 12-1 overall and ranked 10th in Class 1A.
Last week, the Spartans won three games on the road. On Tuesday, May 8, they traveled to Epworth to take on Western Dubuque. The cloudy skies finally opened up after half time with driving rain to make for a cold, wet competition. With four players on the bench due to injuries, quite a few girls stepped up to help the Spartans to a 4-1 win over the Bobcats. Solon’s keeper, Katie Silberstein, did an excellent job defending the goal. Alison McKinnie ended the night with three goals. Anna Seydel had one goal and two assists. Abby Haas had one assist.
Friday evening, the Spartans took the short trip north to Mount Vernon. The Mustangs were no match for the Lady Spartans in a 7-1 win. McKinnie scored four goals. Madi Durr and Jackie Meyer added one each, and Candice Kucera made a goal to make her birthday complete. Seydel had two assists. Alli Mercer and Katherine Carr each had one assist.
The girls hopped right back on the bus Saturday morning and headed a little farther north to Anamosa. The game ended early with a 10-0 shutout. McKinnie had eight goals that morning to take her to the top of the leader board in the state for goals made this season. Meyer and Seydel each added a goal. Seydel also added three assists along with one each from Vik Meade and Emily Ament.
This Friday, May 18, is “Senior Night Stack the Stands” with the girls playing at home against Clear Creek Amana at 4:30 p.m. There will be free sno-cones for the kids, free giveaways and some action for young players at halftime. The three seniors and their parents will be presented after the varsity game.
