IOWA CITY– Solon scored 18 runs in a see-saw battle against No. 6 Iowa City Regina last week.
With 15 RBI and 17 hits for the game, the Spartans used an eight-run second inning to take the lead and despite Regina runs in four consecutive innings, Solon held on for an 18-12 win.
Nathan Hawkins picked up the win on the mound, allowing only four earned runs on nine hits while striking out six. Elijah Kane pitched an inning of relief, striking out two. Austin Dall went 3-3 with four RBI; Todd Oberthien went 4-5 with a double and scored four times; and Tommy Hamiel had three RBI. The Spartans collected 12 walks during 35 at-bats.
Earlier that day, the Spartans took on undefeated Davis County Bloomfield, rallying after allowing eight runs in the fifth inning. Solon scored in each of the last five innings before losing 13-9. Hamiel took the loss for the Spartans, with Jared Lester pitching in relief.
Earlier in the week, Solon dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Western Dubuque, the start of 12 consecutive road games. The Spartans had seven hits but could only plate a single run in an 11-1 loss, and then battled tough before falling 6-4 in the nightcap.
Oberthien took the loss in the first game, allowing eight earned runs and 10 hits. Nolan Asprey pitched nearly three innings of relief. Tim Lance picked up the loss in the second game, allowing only four hits and striking out five. Oberthien was 2-3 at the plate with a double.
On Thursday, June 14, the Spartans managed a split with Maquoketa, winning the first game 7-4 and dropping the second 11-1. Solon rapped 10 singles in the first game but was held to only three hits in the loss.
