Williams Prairie Hike
6:30 p.m.Williams Prairie,
5.5 miles NW of Kent Park
Williams Prairie was bought in the early 1900’s by John Williams for use as a hayfield. In the 1960’s this prairie was discovered by botanists from the University of Iowa. By 1973 the land was purchased by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and in 1976 the area was dedicated as a biological preserve. Today, the Williams Prairie is being managed by the JCCB as a sedge meadow/wet prairie, which is dominated by sedges, bluejoint grass, slough grass and big bluestem. More than 320 species of vascular plants and broyophtes have been reported on this site. Since the last JCCB tour of the site much work has been done to set back the woody invaders. JCCB staff will be leading an educational tour of this hidden jewel of northwest Johnson County. Participants should be prepared to hike through taller vegetation and should bring insect repellent and drinking water. Preregistration requested. Call 319-645-1011 to preregister or email Brad Freidhof at firstname.lastname@example.org . Meet at the JCCB headquarters at 6 p.m. to caravan to the site if you are unaware of its location.
