IOWA CITY– The Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors proved to be no match for Charlie Stumpff’s West High Trojans Friday night as West shut-out the Warriors 6-0 in a Class 4A substate semifinal game at home.
The Trojans put up one run in the top of the first inning and five in the third while holding the Warriors scoreless. Reid Bonner and Tyus Adkins had a double each as well as a pair of RBIs. Devin Raffensperger was also credited with an RBI. Bonner, Adkins and Nick Grimsman also had singles in the offensive effort.
Kellen Yoder, Luke Crimmins and Grimsman shared the mound with Yoder taking the win for his five innings of work. Crimmins and Grimsman threw one inning apiece. Yoder struck out eight, walked two and gave up one run. Crimmins struck out one and gave up one hit while Grimsman struck out two and walked one.
The win advanced West (33-8 overall) to a substate final at home on Wednesday, July 18, with a 7 p.m. start time. The prospect of the Trojans facing rival City High again were dashed as the Little Hawks fell 2-1 to Dubuque Hempstead, setting the table for a Trojan-Mustang meeting. West faced Hempstead on June 8 and dominated the double-header 12-0 and 11-1.
