FT. DODGE– The Lady Spartans needed that first run.
It turned out to be the only one of the game.
Emily Bransky doubled in the bottom of the first inning to begin Solon’s Class 3A semifinal and Alyssa Rickels singled the run home against No. 5 Estherville Lincoln Central Thursday afternoon in Ft. Dodge.
The rest of the game was a pitcher’s duel, with Arran Weeces striking out five and scattering three hits in a 1-0 shut-out that landed the Lady Spartans in the 3A championship game for the first time.
Estherville Lincoln stranded six runners, including two in the fifth inning with runners on second and third with only one out.
The championship game, against Ballard (34-9), will be played at 2:30 p.m. Friday, July 20, on Diamond 1 of the Harlan Rogers Sports Complex in Ft. Dodge.
