TIFFIN– Coach Brian Bronzynski and his Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers took to the floor Thursday, Aug. 23, to open the 2012 varsity season with a visit from friendly rival Solon.
Despite only losing four players to graduation and having an experienced team, and despite a recent shake-up at the top of Solon’s program; the Lady Spartans proved to be too much to handle.
Solon won the match 3-1.
The Lady Spartans took the opener with a decisive 25-19 showing, despite the Clippers keeping it close or tied throughout much of the game. A late surge put the Clippers ahead for the 27-25 win in game two, but the tables turned in the third game as they fell again 26-24. Fatigue may have been a factor as Solon had little trouble in the fourth winning 25-16.
Seniors Amy Kalkhoff and Maliah Fligg led offensively for CCA with 11 and eight kills respectively, while freshman Alyssa Weldon had four. Senior Tara Walls and sophomore Hanna Stokes put up a trio of kills each. Walls made 16 of 17 serves with one ace, Fligg went 13 for 15 with an ace while senior Kate Hergert was perfect with a dozen and a pair of aces. Michelle Lutz, a senior and the Libero made 10 of 11 serves.
Bronzynski’s bunch will be in action again on Thursday, Aug. 30, at Iowa City Regina in a 10th grade, JV and varsity match starting at 6 p.m.
