IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Conservation Board (JCCB) announces the celebration of the acquisition of the Ciha Fen Preserve.
On Saturday, Sept. 22, the JCCB will be hosting a public dedication to celebrate the protection of this rare natural area which was purchased with funds from the Iowa DNR Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) cost-share grant and Johnson County Conservation Bond funds. The celebration is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. until noon at the Ciha Fen Preserve, located at 5656 145th St. NE, Lisbon.
Leaders in the field of conservation will speak about the importance of preserving special natural areas. Following their opening remarks, guests will be invited to participate in a series of educational presentations.
Dr. Jean C. Prior and Dr. Art Bettis will focus on the geology of the area. Dave Wehde and Jeremy Rieck, Johnson County Conservation Board vegetation specialist and technician, will lead a hike to explore the botany of the site. The final session will focus on the wildlife that utilize the site. Rick Hollis, an experienced birder from the Iowa City Bird Club, will guide participants on a short hike through the area and focus on its birds. Naturalist Brad Freidhof will discuss other wildlife species and explain the site’s ongoing multiple species inventory and monitoring project.
Everyone is invited to attend this celebration. Attendees are encouraged to bring water bottles and lawn chairs, and wear close-toed shoes and long pants.
