IOWA CITY– Area high school seniors were recognized with Youth Salute leadership awards, sponsored by Hills Bank and Trust Company, Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Englert Theatre in Iowa City. More than 260 students from 16 area high schools were honored for their academic achievement and leadership contributions. Students were selected by their high school faculty to receive the prestigious award.
The ceremony included American adventurer Charlie Wittmack’s account of his trek across more than 8,000 miles of rugged mountains, treacherous deserts and frigid waters to complete the world’s longest triathlon. From his first steps into the River Thames across 11 countries in Europe and Asia, to his final ascent of Mount Everest, Wittmack’s extraordinary story encouraged his listeners to face their own life challenges with greater courage and determination.
Sarah Fischer (West Branch) and Kieran Green (City High) were recognized as the outstanding youth leaders.
Local leadership award winners included: Lydia Raim of Clear Creek Amana High School; Emma Baxter, Liliana Coelho, Grant Lewis, Francesca Lubecki-Wilde, Avery Mossman, Niall Oliver, De’Airius Salibi, Mohamed Traore and Sid van der Woude, all of City High; Natalie Bonthius, David Crompton, Anna Kron, Katherine Rapp, Marie Schnoebelen and Kimberly Shiu of Regina High School; Ally Disterhoft, Ashley Erickson, Erin Kallsen, Ashley Knudson, Pombie Silverman and Kasra Zarei, all of West High.
