TIFFIN– It only took the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers three sets to sink the Williamsburg Raiders Tuesday night on the home floor.
The Clippers won the first set 25-7, dominating throughout. The second set saw CCA down 5-3 early before the Clippers righted the ship and battled back to the 25-22 win. In the third set, the Creek Girls held leads of 10-5 and 19-9 before a late Raider rally. The Clippers held-on for the 25-17 win.
“Our girls did a nice job of maintaining their defensive positioning and making a strong transition to offense,” Coach Brian Bronzynski said. “Williamsburg is not a team to take lightly,” he added.
The win moved Creek to 10-5-0 in advance of a weekend tournament at Columbus Junction, and on the heels of a solid showing at the Lisbon Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 15. It was at that tournament where the Clippers beat the 10th-ranked (at the time) Lisbon Lions 25-12 and 25-6. In the Thursday, Sept. 20, weekly rankings by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, the Clippers entered the Class 4A rankings in 15th place. The coach provided insight on the strong season thus far.
“This season we have the most experienced players on our roster in the last four years. It’s been a lot of work the past three years, but it has been worth the effort to be able to be a team that can’t hide from being noticed,” said Bronzynski.
Against Williamsburg, Kate Hergert had 18 assists and one ace, Maliah Fligg put up a dozen kills with 13 assists, Alyssa Weldon came up with a pair of aces, two kills and a solo block. Michelle Lutz launched four aces, Amy Kalkhoff made 10 kills and had an ace, Natalie Brimeyer was busy with three kills, two solo blocks and one assisted block while Tara Walls had three aces and three kills. Hanna Stokes made three kills, had two assists and one assisted block while Grace Chabal executed one kill.
“All the credit needs to go to our players who have been so willing to work hard, and improve their skills,” Bronzynski said.
The Clippers are on the road Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Cedar Rapids Prairie Tournament and return home for a Tuesday, Oct. 2, date with Benton Community.
