TIFFIN– The up-and-down season for Clear Creek Amana’s football Clippers continued Friday night as the Anamosa Blue Raiders came to town on Senior Night. Following a 30-14 loss the week before to Central DeWitt, Rodney Walls’ crew was hungry for a win.
The Clippers took command in the pivotal fourth quarter for a 31-13 win.
The Raiders struck first, putting up a field goal in the first quarter, but Jared Ganschow answered for CCA with an 80-yard run good for a touchdown. Niels VanElsas made the extra point kick, and the Clippers had a 7-3 lead. But, with 32 seconds remaining in the period, the Raiders hit again, scoring on a 1-yard run. Their extra point attempt was good and Anamosa took back the lead, 10-7.
Tanner Bandy got the Clippers back on the scoreboard and the lead with a 77-yard touchdown pass from Konrad Moore. Again VanElsas’ kick found its mark. Another Raider field goal made it a 1-point ballgame at the half, with CCA up, 14-13.
Neither side could reach the end zone in the third quarter, setting the table for a dramatic fourth quarter.
The Clippers owned the final 12 minutes, scoring three times. The first was in the first minute on a VanElsas 26-yard field goal, the second with 7:29 left to play as Jon Nzombo scrambled for 19 yards to score. Ganschow scored shortly after Nzombo with a 34-yard pass from Moore. VanElsas made successful point-after kicks and the Clippers put the 31-13 win in the books.
Nzombo led CCA’s ground war with 20 carries for 120 yards. Ganschow had only two carries, but covered 85 yards in the process. Bandy’s three carries were good for 34 yards. Josh Martinac had one carry for 9 yards, Mitch Stopko carried the ball four times for 4 yards and Moore kept the ball a lucky 13 times for a gain of 13 yards.
Moore completed 12 of 22 passes with one interception for 185 yards. Bandy took two of those passes, Ganschow caught three for 47 yards and AJ Liddell took four for 33 yards. Andrew Beckler received three for 32.
Defensively, Miguel Mosaquites had three unassisted tackles and eight assisted for 11 total. Aaron Campbell had one and eight for nine total while Martinac had three and four for seven. Bandy and Jake Swenka totaled five tackles each; Bryan Marmolejo and Stephen Jensen had four apiece.
The Clippers honored 14 seniors: Moore, Liddell, Martinac, Campbell, Kam Kahler, Zach Anderson, Mosaquites, Ganschow, VanElsas, Swenka, Nick Strasser, Tanner Martinson, Zach Smith and Beau Gerard.
Next up for CCA is a visit to Marion on Oct. 12. The regular season ends on Oct. 19 with another road trip to Maquoketa.
