DEWITT– Keegan Paisley and Patrick McGill led the way to a first division finish for Solon, at the Oct. 11 WaMaC meet in DeWitt.
Vinton-Shellsburg stayed just out of reach of Mount Vernon-Lisbon to take the boys’ team title 87 to 95. Marion (110) stayed close, too. Following them were Center Point-Urbana (131), Western Dubuque (154), Benton (171) and Waterloo Columbus (176).
Paisley (17:59, 31st) finished a tick ahead of McGill (18:00, 32nd) helping the Spartans to an eighth place finish in the 16-team field. Quinn Kelsay (18:15) and Matt Reiland (18:18) were 41st and 44th, with Ty Appleget (18:37) 57th to cement the finish; their 205 points staying just ahead of Williamsburg (213) and Clear Creek-Amana (221). “The varsity boys ran okay, but didn’t have their best race of the year. We are hoping we can put that together for next Thursday,” assessed coach Emy Williams.
Closing out the 16-team field were Maquoketa (261), Anamosa (308), Central DeWitt (320), West Delaware (381), Independence (427) and Dyersville Beckman (431)
Again, in the junior varsity race, the Spartans raced away with first place. All five scoring runners crowded into the top 10, led by a 2-3 finish from Nik Rehnke (18:27) and Keegan Hess (18:42) over the 5-kilometer course. David Coberly (18:58) was sixth, with Ryan Kunkel seventh (19:05) and Josh Prybil 10th (19:09) in the 166-runner field. Only Benton (47 team points) was close to Solon’s 28. “It’s so fun to see the JV boys keep coming and coming; to have so many at the top,” admitted Williams.
Next up is the Oct. 18 state qualifying meet at Anamosa. The top three teams there, and the top 10 individual runners, advance to state Oct. 27.
