NORTH LIBERTY– Van Allen Elementary will host a ThinkFirst for Kids injury prevention program for students on Nov. 7 at 12:45 and 1:45 p.m. at 170 Abigail Ave. in North Liberty.
Each year, about 600 Iowans become paralyzed from a spinal cord injury. Another 5,000 will suffer traumatic brain injuries. Young Iowans are at high-risk for these devastating injuries, many of which are preventable.
The ThinkFirst for Kids program educates young Iowans about injury prevention during 45-minute presentations which include a movie and a VIP (Voice for Injury Prevention) speaker who shares what it’s like to have a traumatic brain or spinal cord injury, and a few fun demonstrations to encourage safety.
The program emphasizes safety activities to prevent a brain or spinal cord injury, including wearing safety belts, wearing helmets during sports and avoiding situations with potential for violence.
