VICTOR– The Lady Spartans have punched their ticket for a trip to Cedar Rapids.
Solon defeated No. 15 Oskaloosa, 3-1, in a regional final last Tuesday (Oct. 30) in Victor and will now face No. 3 Harlan (32-5) in the first round of the Class 4A volleyball tournament Wednesday, Nov. 7 (tonight) at 6 p.m. on Court Two of the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
If successful, the Lady Spartans, would advance to a semifinal against either West Delaware or Bishop Heelan Friday, Nov. 9, at 1:45 p.m. (also on Court Two), with the 4A final scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 10, at noon.
It will mark the second appearance for the Lady Spartans at the state tournament. Solon’s first appearance in 2011 was bittersweet, with a five-set loss to Union of LaPorte City. Union went on to lose in the second round to eventual champion Waverly Shell Rock.
At Victor last week, Solon’s girls celebrated with their state qualifier banner after their 25-11, 23-25, 25-11, 25-18 victory against Oskaloosa.
The Lady Spartans dropped the second game during a run of errors, but otherwise dominated the match.
Jordan Runge led the offensive attack with an efficient 21 kills. Jordan Smith had 16 kills, while Kelsey Cave added 15 and Kelsey Hinrichs had nine. Emma Rickels led the team with 52 assists. Rickels also found success at the service line, where she was 11-12. Rylee Smith was 33-34 from the stripe with four aces to lead Solon. Taylor Nearad was 17-17 with one ace, while Hinrichs was 15-18 with an ace.
Defensively, Cave had five blocks while Runge had four. Smith had 29 digs, while Smith had 19 and Hinrichs added 15.
